The Elections System of the Virgin Islands has released its certified candidate list for the 2026 election cycle, officially confirming Gregory P. Smith as an independent candidate for the Legislature in the St. Thomas–St. John District.

The announcement marks an important milestone for Smith's campaign as candidates across the territory prepare for the next phase of the election season.

Certification was delayed for several weeks while election officials reviewed nomination papers, addressed filing questions and considered challenges involving candidates seeking several different offices. Some of those disputes may continue through additional administrative hearings or court proceedings.

For Gregory, certification means the campaign can now move forward with its focus where it belongs: listening to residents, discussing practical priorities and earning the trust of voters across St. Thomas and St. John.

"This campaign has never been about joining a political side. It is about bringing people together, listening to the concerns that affect everyday life and working toward practical solutions that strengthen our islands."

A Crowded Field of Candidates

The certified list includes a large field of candidates seeking seats in the St. Thomas–St. John District Legislature.

That gives voters a wide range of choices, but it also makes it especially important for each candidate to clearly explain their experience, priorities and approach to public service.

Gregory is running as an independent because he believes a senator should examine each issue on its merits—not vote according to party pressure, political alliances or personal interests.

His campaign is focused on concerns residents experience every day, including:

  • Reliable roads, electricity, water and essential services
  • Affordability, housing, taxes and the cost of living
  • Support for locally owned businesses and workforce opportunities
  • Government accountability and responsible use of public money
  • Public safety, emergency readiness and stronger opportunities for young people
  • Mental-health, substance-abuse and community-wellness resources

Moving Forward Together

Certification is only the beginning.

Over the coming months, Gregory plans to continue meeting with residents, business owners, workers, parents and community leaders throughout the district. Those conversations will help shape a campaign grounded in local experience and the real concerns of the people he hopes to represent.

The 2026 General Election is scheduled for November 3.
